How Do You Find A Word That Means Brianna?
I have been wanting to post about Brianna, but the thought of trying to capture Brianna in words is always daunting. As I was thinking about this, the scene from the Sound of Music with the nuns discussing Maria came to mind. The song they sing about Maria could have been written about our Brianna. I have bolded the lines in the song that are so 'Brianna'.
She climbs a tree and scrapes her knee (only, Brianna would have gotten the scrape by JUMPING OUT of the tree).
Her dress has got a tear
She waltzes on her way to Mass
And whistles on the stair (Brianna doesn't attend Mass, but she is full of a happiness that just spills out of her wherever she goes.)
And underneath her wimple
She has curlers in her hair (Even though she knows the rules, she'll do things her own way.)
I even heard her singing in the abbey
I'd like to say a word in her behalf
Maria makes me laugh
How do you solve a problem like Maria?
How do you catch a cloud and pin it down?
How do you find a word that means Maria?
A flibbertijibbet! A will-o'-the wisp! A clown!
Many a thing you know you'd like to tell her
Many a thing she ought to understand
But how do you make her stay
And listen to all you say
How do you keep a wave upon the sand
Oh, how do you solve a problem like Maria?
How do you hold a moonbeam in your hand?
When I'm with her I'm confused
Out of focus and bemused
And I never know exactly where I am
Unpredictable as weather
She's as flighty as a feather
She's a darling! She's a demon! She's a lamb!
She'd outpester any pest (Mostly Ben.)
Drive a hornet from its nest
She could throw a whirling dervish out of whirl
She is gentle! She is wild!
She's a riddle! She's a child!
She's a headache! She's an angel!
She's a girl!
How do you solve a problem like Maria?
How do you catch a cloud and pin it down?
How do you find a word that means Maria?
A flibbertijibbet! A will-o'-the wisp! A clown!
Many a thing you know you'd like to tell her
Many a thing she ought to understand
But how do you make her stay
And listen to all you say
How do you keep a wave upon the sand
Oh, how do you solve a problem like Maria?
How do you hold a moonbeam in your hand?

How Am I Supposed to Take That?
Last Sunday, Ben and I were lounging on the couch. He had his feet pointed toward me, so I started massaging them. Every time I stopped, he would get after me to keep going. He also kept pointing out areas that needed more attention.
I finally laughed and said, "What? Do you think I'm your personal massage therapist?"
Without missing a beat, he replied, "Well, you're the only one available."

Ben Is Growing in the Gospel
A while back, Ben was having some trouble at school. He had gotten into a bit of trouble for misbehaving. There are a lot of rowdy boys in his class, and it seems that he was just trying to fit in with them.

Finally, ... Success!!
I've been trying to come up with a song for Ben that would meet his approval. I've finally done it! To the tune of "Are you sleeping, Brother John?", I bring you Ben's song:
Benjamin, Benjamin,
I love you!
It is true.
You are very good, and
You are very smart, and
I love you!
It is true!

Childhood Traumas
Poor Brianna had a rough day. First of all, she and Ben and a friend were playing on the swingset in the backyard. I was keeping an eye on them through the kitchen window while I worked on dinner. I heard a little screech, and quickly glanced out. What I saw made my heart skip, and I ran at full speed outside. Brianna's pigtail had gotten caught in the chain of the swing. However, before I could reach her to rescue her, she had torn free, leaving behind a significant bunch of precious hair. OUCH!!!!
As I was trying to comfort her, she said, "I heed a binkie. I a baby." We've been telling her lately that she's a big girl, and binkies are for babies. She got her binkie. (She says 'heed' for 'need', so cute.)
Then, tonight, after the RS Birthday party, Brianna was given a helium balloon. She was incredibly anxious about her balloon as we left the Church, and wanted me to hold it for her. I did so, but had to continually assure her that I had a good hold of it and that it wasn't going anywhere. The poor girl was nearly sobbing.
She was fine holding her balloon on the ride home, but then when we got into the house, she did begin to sob. I tried and tried to get her to tell me, in a coherent fashion, what was upsetting her. Finally, I understood "Rock-scissors the string." She calls scissors 'rock-scissors' from the game "paper/rock/scissors". So I realized that she wanted me to cut the string. I had her show me where to cut the string, so as not to risk further upsetting her. She had me leave about four inches of string. When I handed it back to her, she again began to sob, and told me to "Rock-scissors more." So, I cut off all of the string.
When I handed the balloon back to her, she seemed satisfied, and tried to set the balloon on the floor. When it immediately started to float, she began to freak out. Finally, I realized that she thought the string is what makes the balloon float, and that a floating balloon for some reason was really freaking her out.
I wasn't able to get her to calm down, until I placed the balloon under an empty laundry basket. Even then, she stood back cautiously watching it, and asking, "Not going up?"
So, please, when Brianna's birthday rolls around, DON'T SEND BALLOONS!

Reality Check
As we rushed out the door to the bus stop this morning, I had a horrible realization. I said to Ben, "Oh my gosh! I haven't even brushed my hair yet. How bad is it?"
Ben replied, matter-of-factly, "Bad."

Privacy
Last Saturday, during a Star Wars party I had for Ben and a couple of his little friends, Brianna went into the bathroom for an extended period of time. Brianna is not yet potty-trained, therefore, this is usually not a good sign. So, I went to check on her. I found her sitting underneath the sink.
She said, "No, Mommy! Need pri-cy"
**************Speaking of privacy, I promised you a while back to tell you about our strange robin that lives in our tree.
One morning, I opened the shade in Ben's room, and saw that the trees in our front yard were full of birds. I quickly called Brianna to come and see the birds. As we sat there and watched, we witnessed our robin driving off all of the other birds. He/she would fly directly at them, and when they would fly off of the branch -- to save their skins (and feathers) -- our bird would land right where they had been. He/she systematically cleared all the other birds from our trees in this manner.
I figure he also just needed some "pri-cy".

"I So Safe"
A few weeks ago, I heard Brianna calling out to me, "I so safe, Mommy. I so safe." I followed her voice to the stairs, where I found her -- not so safely -- coming down on her tummy, head first.
Brianna has been out of gymnastics for the last eight weeks. It gave her time to get her tonsils out, and to fully recover. For the most part it was good to have the break. However, this eight week period also coincided with this new phrase that Brianna has adopted whenever doing something that puts her in harm's way: "I so safe."
Here are some examples. Of course, they are in public:

Who needs gymnastics, when Home Depot provides uneven bars? And, they conveniently move around the store with you!!

Toward the end of our Home Depot shopping trip, I heard the LONGEST announcement I have ever heard over the PA system. It detailed how parents are responsible for their children's safety, and how the carts are not for playing on. I just kept nodding, and saying out loud, "I know, we'll cover the hospital visit."
